According to Webster's Dictionary, a fascicle is "one of the division of a book published in parts." This material represents significant updates to Volume 1, Third Edition of Donald Knuth's The Art of Computer Programming. Knuth's fascicle philosophy is as follows: "The material will first appear in betatest form as fascicles of approximately 128 pages each, issued approximately twice per year. These fascicles will represent my best attempt to write a comprehensive account, but computer science has grown to the point where I cannot hope to be an authority on all the material covered in these books. Therefore I'll need feedback from readers in order to prepare the official volumes later."

Über den Autor

Donald E. Knuth is known throughout the world for his pioneering work on algorithms and programming techniques, for his invention of the Tex and Metafont systems for computer typesetting, and for his prolific and influential writing. Professor Emeritus of The Art of Computer Programming at Stanford University, he currently devotes full time to the completion of these fascicles and the seven volumes to which they belong.
