Beschreibung
When spiritual certainty disappears and the soul is left in darkness, that darkness may become the path to a deeper encounter with God.
In Dark Night of the Soul, Saint John of the Cross explores the painful spiritual purification through which the soul must pass before attaining divine union. Familiar consolations fade, prayer appears empty, and the seeker feels abandoned. Yet this apparent absence is not a failure of faith. It is a transformative night in which pride, attachment, and dependence upon comforting emotions are stripped away.
Blending mystical poetry with profound spiritual commentary, Saint John portrays the soul as a lover traveling secretly through darkness toward the divine Beloved. His account of uncertainty, detachment, suffering, and renewal has influenced Christian contemplatives for centuries and given the phrase "dark night of the soul" an enduring place in religious and psychological thought.
Both challenging and deeply hopeful, Dark Night of the Soul offers a timeless meditation on faith tested by silence, the purification of desire, and the journey toward complete union with God.
