John Travers has been hanged for the murder of his mother-in-law, Helga. Yet to those who knew him, the verdict does not sit easily.
Compelled by a desire for justice and troubled by the sense that darker forces were at play, John's friend Doctor Toogood sets out to tell the true story. What unfolds is a haunting tale of love, jealousy, and the malign influence of a shadowy and implacable evil that reaches far beyond the ordinary motives of crime.
First published in 1927, this unsettling novel by husband-and-wife writing duo Rosalie and Edward Synton, whose real surname was Corse-Scott, disappeared from view for nearly a century. Now restored from library collections, it returns to deliver its occult chills and atmospheric intrigue to a new generation of readers.

Johnny Mains is a British Fantasy Award-winning editor and genre researcher. He served as Project Editor for the 2010 reissue of The Pan Book of Horror Stories and created the critically acclaimed series Dead Funny: Horror Stories by Comedians (co-edited with Robin Ince). Over the past five years, he has immersed himself in literary archives, uncovering previously "lost" stories by notable authors including Edith Nesbit, Algernon Blackwood, Oscar Cook, and Daphne du Maurier.
Rosalie and Edward Synton was the joint pseudonym of the married couple Rosalie (1889-1939) and Edward (1883-1943) Corse-Scott. The pair emigrated to New Zealand from their home, "Little Synton," near Verwood in Dorset. Rosalie was born in Ireland, and Edward to a British family in India. Edward published poetry collections under his own name, as well as books and music under the "Synton" pen name. Possessed appears to be their only venture into weird fiction, though research into their work continues.
