What does it really take to lead men in battle? Drawing on his firsthand experience commanding the 6th Finnish Rifle Regiment during World War I, Aleksandr Svechin offers in this book a rare, unfiltered portrait of frontline leadership. Far from glorifying war, Svechin illuminates the gritty, day-to-day realities of command--from managing exhaustion, morale, and tactical improvisation, to confronting the failures of the Imperial Russian military system. This is not just a memoir but a tactical case study, brought to life with vivid detail and honest reflection. Presented here for the first time in English, and enriched by extensive archival material, editorial notes, and historical context, this edition offers scholars, military professionals, and interested readers alike an unprecedented window into the practical challenges of regimental command. Svechin's voice--analytical, candid, and often self-critical--bridges the divide between past and present, theory and action.
