Beschreibung

Neumann (Norwegian Institute of International Affairs), who worked at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and observed diplomats, demonstrates how diplomacy is conducted on a day-to-day basis and examines the various aspects of diplomatic work, including immunity, permanent representation, diplomatic sociability, accreditation, globalization and issues of gender and class. He discusses such practices as relations with foreign ministries, mediating between other people's positions, adhering to compulsory routines and agendas, and generating knowledge. He begins with a discussion of key diplomatic systems in history (with a focus on Europe and the Danish composite state of which Norway was a part) to illustrate that diplomacy is a historical cross-cultural phenomenon, and compares diplomats working abroad with those at home, showing how those in the field focus on gathering and processing information, while those at home produce texts like reports, speeches, positions, and papers.
