In the last three decades, studies in the historyand sociology of technology have taught us a greatdeal about the processes of invention, development,and diffusion. However, almost nothing is known,historically, about the technologies of pregnancytermination.Despite the fact that these technologies are havingan enormous social, ethical, and economic impact ontoday's world, no scholar has ever thoroughlyexplored the changing technologies of abortion(especially those used by physicians) in the UnitedStates between the years 1850 and 1980, and noeffort has been made to understand how thesechanging technologies were connected to the politicsof medical professionalization, specialization, andcommercialization. This work seeks to fill thishistorical vacuum.
