His first published short story was "Heart" in the collection Fool for Love: New Gay Fiction. This began his long love affair with shorter fiction, including novellas and novelettes. Even though shorter fictions are his favorite, 'Nathan does write novels. His first, Light, was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award, and his debut YA novel, Exit Plans for Teenage Freaks, was a finalist for the Prix Aurora Award.
